Drug and Alcohol usage on college campus has risen drastically over the past few years. There is no slowing down and the statistics are baffling. The biggest issue with all of this is how the schools sweep these problems under the rug to avoid negative publicity. In my opinion they are putting their students in harms way by not addressing the issue but instead turning a blind eye to it. So how much do they really care about their students?
Here are some staggering statistics..
50% of full-time college students binge drink, abuse prescription drugs and/or abuse illegal drugs (3.8 million).
22.9% of college students meet the medical criteria for substance abuse or dependence, 2 and a half times the proportion (8.5%) of those who meet the criteria in the rest of the population.
More than 1,700 students die from alcohol poisoning and alcohol-related injuries per year. On average annually 700,000 students are assaulted by classmates who have been consuming alcohol. One of he most eye opening statistics that I came across was the fact that almost 100,000 students are victims of alcohol-related sexual assaults and rapes.
